In the past couple of weeks, Karin and I acquired several signed books. The two in the photo above are signed to our son.

When I read Maniac Magee in third grade, I was blown away. I’m not sure I ever read it more than that one time, but I still have thought about it countless times over the last 17 years. Karin met Jerry Spinelli at the beginning of the month at the PALA conference in Valley Forge and brought home the signed copy seen above. I got very excited. A few days later, I started reading the book aloud to our baby. I was only a few words into the prologue before I remembered why it was I have been so enamored with this book for so many years. Even after almost two decades of building up this book in my mind, it is still surpassing my expectations.

On the same day that Karin got Maniac Magee, I picked up a signed first edition of The Way Things Work by David Macaulay, another book I loved as a child (and, frankly, still do). I had seen the book at DogStar Books downtown several weeks ago, but didn’t buy it because I didn’t want to spend $50 without consulting Karin. When I got home and told her about it, I was chastised for not making the purchase. When I was back in DogStar a couple weeks ago, I was very happy to find it right where I had left it.

Also joining the ranks of our signed book collection this month were all of John Green’s other books, thanks to seeing he and his brother Hank when the Tour de Nerdfighting stopped in Lancaster.
